About the project

Part 1

Food Memories began in 2017 as a creative writing and photographic project in collaboration with the women’s integration center in Copenhagen Kringlebakken, supported by Bispebjerg Lokaludvalg.

After a series of informal encounters over lunch and tea, several of the women who attend Kringlebakken participated in a series of life-writing workshops led by researcher and writer Sacramento Roselló. The resulting texts were the inspiration for the work that followed with photographer Mayra Navarrete on creating portrait photographs  representing the dialogue between their narratives on food heritage and their life in Denmark. The exhibition of portraits and excerpts from their stories have travelled to three venues in Copenhagen so far.

Part 2

In 2023, Food Memories has reemerged as a soundscape which has begun with a short video and a new set of memories shared by the women of Kringlebakken. The memories above are just the begin which were made with the generous support of Nørrebro Lokaludvalg

Our goal is to create a multilingual sound archive of food memories to value the experiences that nourished us into being who we are, the sensorial encounters that helped us understand the world and our place in it, the anecdotes, the happenstances that ground us in the landscapes, traditions and living heritage that we carry and pass on as we travel through life.
