When the Russian forces invaded Ukraine our hearts went out to (and continue to be with) all of the people affected by this atrocious act. At the time, we had recently received funding to carry out a project with the Danish Cultural Institute St Petersburg that focused on female artists of foreign origin in the Nordic region and Russia. We were of course sad that this collaboration and funding ceased as a result of the war – it is precisely at these times that the power of art to transcend words, offer hope, and, as Jana Simackova from InterNations in Estonia writes, to lift the spirit of humanity is needed.
We anticipated that there would be an influx of artists from Ukraine to Denmark, as there was when IMMART started in 2016 and the large wave of protection seekers were arriving from Syria. As we did back then, IMMART actively took the decision to wait and trust that through our Network, we would be able to welcome Ukrainian artists in the same way that we welcome artists of all nationalities to IMMART—with empathy, heart and as equals—and raise funds for Ukraine.
Sure enough, through our friends at Human Hotel we were introduced to curator, artists and art therapist, Julia Dmukh who asked if we would like to collaborate on a fundraiser for Ukraine. We said yes!
We are so pleased to be collaborating with Gallerie Lorien, the Embassy of Ukraine and Bevar Ukraine on an exhibition of Ukrainian artists, many of whom are living in Denmark, From Ukraine with Love. We are also very, very happy to announce that when the works are sold, 50% of the sale price will go to the artist, and the other 50% to the charity Bevar Ukraine who are doing amazing work facilitating, among other things, the safe delivery of medical supplies, as well as funding for local NGOs and for reconstruction work.
